First Impressions – Lasting Impressions

 
I am fascinated by the correlation between first impressions and the way relationships ultimately turn out. As I survey the numerous business relationships I have had during the past twenty-plus years, three trends stand out:

1)                  All or nothing. My relationships tend to both start out with a bang and last for decades – or the relationship doesn’t take place at all!

2)                  Immediate visceral response. I can usually predict, within minutes of first talking to a prospective client, vendor, or workshop attendee, whether a mutually satisfying relationship is going to take place – or just isn’t worth trying.

3)                 Business relationships often turn into personal relationships. Long after the reason for our initial encounter, and long after we have reason to work with each other, my strongest business relationships remain as friends – if only e-mail friends.

More concerned than proud

I’m not proud of my ability to “predict” successful relationships! I’m concerned that my prejudging at first meeting creates a self-fulfilling prophecy, i.e., I don’t think the relationship is going to happen, so I don’t try as hard to make it happen.

Yet, numbers are on my side.
