How
to impress me with your product or service
After
having seen thousands of products over 30 years of being in business, I look
towards a few key factors in determining my interest.
First,
I am never impressed with a person who comes to me with an idea and that is all
they have.
Ideas
are a dime a dozen and millions of people have ideas. It’s part of our make
up. The key to reaching and tweaking my interest is to what extent a person
takes that idea and does something with it. Let me give you an example.
If
somebody came to me and said that they had an idea for a product, they have a
prototype and they have protected the product either through a patent, a patent
application or a legal document memorializing the concept, then, they will have
my interest.
These
steps are vital.
First
because it shows that the invention or product can be made. Secondly, it shows
that the inventor or idea person is willing to make the commitment to give birth
to this product.
But
what would really impress me is if this same inventor came to me with all of the
above and a working pre-production sample manufactured by a low-cost producer
(unfortunately, usually outside the US and most likely in the Far East) and has
the costs determined for various manufactured quantities.
With
this information, I can make a decision on the spot.
I
can determine if there is interest in the product based on all the parameters I
need to know to both manufacture the product and sell it. Of course, this is
assuming it is a product whose category I know well such as consumer
electronics, sunglasses or some area of expertise in which I may have a great
deal of experience.
Now
let us say that you want to contact me to present a new product. How would you
go about it?
First I would like to see something ...
