Relationships are the sizzle that makes the “steak” of life tender and easy to chew.

We are social beings, who need human-to-human contact, especially in the world where many of us sit behind the computer for hours – and what can seem like days – at a time.

If you want to get to know me or someone else whose work you like or whom you feel would be a complement to what you’re doing … or you just want to be pals or have a personal relationship with this person, there are few key points to keep in mind.

  1. People today are extremely busy
  2. We get a lot of e-mail, and specifically a lot of junk designed to look like it’s from our best friend
  3. The more successful a person is, the more people want a part of that success
  4. We probably are careful choosing who we associate with and are slow to trust
  5. We’re just like you

Let’s talk about these five points in greater detail, so you know what I mean and can put them to use as you reach out and share who you are with more people.

1. All of us have more work than we know what to do with.

Remember that as you contact the people you want to befriend.

Respect their time. I mean if you’re e-mailing them, keep your letter short. If you’re calling them, leave a short message or only take two or three minutes from their busy schedule if you talk personally with them.


2. Make sure your e-mail gets read

Put something that is meaningful and specific to them in the subject of an e-mail, such as ...
